Building an Outdoor Turtle Enclosure in 24 Hours
One TikTok idea, one talented grandpa, and a secure outdoor space built for Jack and Charlie in a single day.

If you've spent any amount of time on TikTok, you'll know how dangerous it can be.
One minute you're watching a cooking video.
The next you're convinced you need to build an outdoor turtle enclosure.
That's exactly what happened to us.
I came across a video of a simple outdoor turtle enclosure and thought, "That would be amazing for our turtles."
I showed it to my dad.
Twenty-four hours later, he had built one.
Because apparently when your daughter says, "Wouldn't this be cool?" some dads hear, "This is an emergency construction project."
And honestly? Our turtles have the best grandpa.
The Inspiration
The enclosure started with a single TikTok video.
I loved the idea of giving our turtles a safe outdoor space where they could enjoy natural sunlight, fresh air, and a more natural environment while still being protected.
The original enclosure was simple and practical, which made it the perfect DIY project.
At least, it was simple for my dad.
For the rest of us, it looked like wizardry.
Built in a Single Day
What impressed me most wasn't just the finished enclosure.
It was how quickly it came together.
Using materials we already had available, my dad built the entire structure in less than 24 hours.
The enclosure features:
- Solid wooden walls for security
- A hinged mesh lid for easy access
- Ventilated mesh sides
- A sturdy raised design
- Plenty of protection from curious predators
The hinged top is one of my favourite features.
It makes feeding, cleaning, and checking on the turtles incredibly easy while keeping the enclosure secure when closed.
Why We Wanted an Outdoor Enclosure
One of the biggest benefits of outdoor time for turtles is access to natural sunlight.
While quality UVB lighting is essential indoors, nothing truly replicates the sun.
Natural sunlight can help support:
- Healthy shell development
- Normal basking behaviour
- Natural activity levels
- Overall wellbeing
Of course, outdoor time should always be supervised and designed with safety in mind.
Predators, overheating, and escape risks are all things that need to be considered when planning an outdoor setup.
That's why a secure enclosure was non-negotiable for us.
Designed for Safety
One thing we didn't want was a setup where we'd constantly worry about the turtles.
The mesh lid keeps them protected while still allowing sunlight and airflow.
The wooden structure feels sturdy and secure, and the raised design helps keep the enclosure away from ground-level pests and moisture.
The entire build focuses on balancing two things:
Giving the turtles a natural experience while keeping them safe.
The Best Part
The best part isn't the enclosure itself.
It's knowing who built it.
Every time we put the turtles outside, we're reminded that their grandpa spent an entire day turning a random TikTok idea into something real.
And let's be honest...
Most turtles don't have a dedicated construction crew.
Ours do.
What's Next?
The enclosure is still evolving.
We're planning to add:
- More natural decorations
- Additional hiding spots
- Safe plants
- Different textures for enrichment
One of the fun things about building something yourself is that you can continue improving it over time.
We'll definitely be sharing updates as the project grows.
Final Thoughts
When we first got our turtles, we never imagined they'd end up with a custom-built outdoor enclosure.
But thanks to one TikTok video and one very talented dad, they now have a safe place to enjoy the sunshine.
The turtles may not fully appreciate the effort that went into building it.
But we certainly do.
And if you're reading this, Dad:
The turtles said thanks.
(Or at least they would if they weren't busy begging for food.)
